Plus costs $80 per month plus $12 per person and Premium costs $180 per month plus $22 per person. Those are Gusto's published US list prices, checked October 23, 2026. Your actual bill depends on the plan, active employees, paid contractors and optional services.

The headline rates aren't the whole purchasing decision. A company hiring in another state may need Plus rather than Simple, while a team that needs remote I-9 verification, faster pay or premium support should compare the cost of add-ons against upgrading. Gusto also changed its plan packaging in October 2026, so older reviews can lead you toward a contractor-only plan that new customers can't buy.

On this page

Gusto pricing plans at a glance

How much does Gusto cost for your headcount?

Which Gusto plan should you choose?

What changed in Gusto pricing and plans in October 2026?

Gusto add-on pricing: what makes the bill grow?

People-ops checklist: budget the handoffs, not just payroll

Contracts, billing and cancellation

Gusto pricing compared with alternatives

Frequently asked questions about Gusto pricing

Gusto pricing plans at a glance

Gusto currently publishes three core payroll plans for teams: Simple, Plus and Premium. They aren't quotes for your particular workforce. Gusto says it charges for active employees and bills US contractors in months when they're paid, which can make a mixed workforce's invoice vary from month to month.

How much does Gusto cost for your headcount?

Gusto's core monthly subscription is the plan's base fee plus its per-person fee multiplied by the number of billable people. Use the calculator for an employee-only baseline, then add the optional charges and any contractor activity that applies to your business.

Billable people: 10 people

SimpleSingle-state payroll$109 per month

PlusMulti-state payroll and time tools$200 per month

PremiumPremium support and compliance tools$400 per month

Illustrative monthly subscription only, using published US rates on October 23, 2026. Doesn't include benefits premiums, state registration, paid add-ons or contractor months with different billing.

A small team can compare plans by looking at the total invoice rather than the base fee. At ten people, the Plus subscription is $91 per month more than Simple. That extra amount buys the Plus feature set for the entire team, so the right question is whether the workflow needs those features, not whether one extra per-person fee looks small.

The gap widens with headcount. At 25 people, Plus costs $181 more per month than Simple. Premium costs $350 more than Plus at the same headcount. If you expect substantial hiring, you'll want to model the cost at its planned headcount, not only the number on payroll today.

Example: an employer with 10 employees

A ten-person company in one state would pay $109 per month on Simple before add-ons. If the company needs multi-state payroll, Plus would be $200 per month for the same headcount. If it wants Premium's support and bundled compliance features, the corresponding subscription is $400 per month.

Of course, those amounts exclude wages, employer payroll taxes and benefit premiums. Payroll software doesn't replace the employer's obligation to fund compensation or taxes. Keep those budget lines separate from the software subscription so the HR and finance teams can reconcile them independently.

Example: a company hiring across state lines

Suppose a 15-person employer is on Simple at $139 per month. The business hires another employee in a different state and moves to Plus. With 16 billable people, Plus costs $272 per month, a $133 increase over the previous subscription. The comparison reflects both a larger team and a different plan.

The operational change matters as much as the arithmetic. Before hiring, HR should confirm where the employee will work, finance should review state registration needs and payroll should confirm the appropriate plan and first pay date. A payroll upgrade doesn't complete the state setup work by itself.

Which Gusto plan should you choose?

Choose Simple for a small employer that runs payroll in one state and doesn't need the more advanced time and pay options. Choose Plus when multi-state payroll or built-in time tracking is a requirement. Choose Premium when the bundled HR guidance, Gusto Business Compliance and Premium Account Support are worth the higher recurring subscription.

Pay employees in one state with core payroll and tax filingSimple, unless paid add-ons make Plus more economical

Run payroll across multiple statesPlus or Premium

Track employee time and scheduling in the same systemPlus, Premium or evaluate the Simple add-on

Get unlimited next-day payPlus or Premium; Simple has a paid option

Get included same-day and instant pay, subject to eligibilityPremium

Have a Premium Account Partner and included business compliance toolsPremium

Pay only contractors as a new customerCompare the current core plans; the legacy Contractor-only plan is closed to new signups

Simple: a sensible baseline for single-state payroll

Simple includes unlimited payroll runs, tax filings and payments, and basic PTO policies. That's enough for an employer whose payroll needs are straightforward and whose people work in one state. Gusto's price page clearly says there's no extra charge for off-cycle payroll runs, which is handy when payroll corrections or bonus runs arise.

The tradeoff's what happens outside payroll. Simple customers can add Time & Attendance Plus, Next-Day pay and Priority Support, but those purchases can erode the price difference from Plus. If you need several of them, compare the combined bill with Plus before committing.

Simple is also subject to newer limits on administrative flexibility. For new Simple accounts opened from August 31, 2026, Gusto's plan notice describes standard admin roles and a single custom earning type. HR and payroll administrators with complex approval chains should check those constraints before assuming the cheapest plan will work.

Plus: the practical choice for distributed teams

Plus adds multi-state payroll, time tracking and scheduling, unlimited next-day pay and contractor invoice management. The benefit's less about a longer feature list and more about reducing handoffs between time capture, payroll processing and manager approvals.

For an hourly workforce, the people-ops lead should map who approves timesheets, who corrects missed punches and who checks the payroll cutoff. A feature can be included in a plan and still require a documented process. Plus is often the better operational fit when those handoffs would otherwise happen in spreadsheets or separate applications.

Plus isn't the same as Premium. Gusto's October notice puts its built-in HR Resources suite on Premium for new customers. If your HR team expects access to that service, don't assume the middle tier includes it merely because an older review mentions an HR add-on.

Premium: pay for a defined support and compliance need

Premium includes Premium Account Support, HR guidance and tools, Gusto Business Compliance and unlimited same-day and instant pay, subject to eligibility. The Premium Account Partner is the named support relationship Gusto now describes for this plan.

Premium's value depends on whether your team will use those services. A company with an experienced payroll administrator and no need for faster pay may not benefit enough to justify the higher per-person fee. A company expanding across states with limited internal HR capacity should compare the included services with the add-on costs and the internal time required to manage those tasks.

Don't treat Gusto Business Compliance as a substitute for legal advice. Define who reviews state requirements, who authorizes filings and who retains evidence. Software can surface and organize work, but a named owner still needs to make the decision.

What changed in Gusto pricing and plans in October 2026?

Gusto changed its plan packaging for new customers beginning October 1, 2026, while saying that existing customers would receive added features without a general price increase. The most important buyer changes concern Contractor-only availability, HR Resources, Performance, broker integration and administrative limits.

Older pricing guides may be wrong Gusto's official October 2026 plan notice says the Contractor-only plan is no longer available to new customers. It also changes HR Resources and Performance availability. Confirm that any comparison you read reflects the new packaging, not a legacy account.

The official notice gives the following practical distinctions:

Change

What a new buyer should know

Contractor-only

No longer offered to new customers from October 1, 2026

HR Resources

Offered on Premium for new customers, not sold as a new Simple or Plus add-on

Performance

Included in Plus for new customers; no longer sold as a new add-on

Broker integration

Paid on new Premium accounts, while eligible existing Premium customers keep legacy inclusion

Simple admin controls

New Simple accounts have standard admin roles and one custom earning type

Plus admin controls

New Plus accounts have one custom admin role

That's why a buyer should ask whether a review or a quote is describing the current package or a legacy account. The difference can change both the subscription you need and the permissions your administrators will have. If you're migrating an existing Gusto account, don't assume every new-customer rule applies to you.

Is Gusto Contractor Only still available?

Gusto Contractor-only is not available to new customers starting October 1, 2026. Existing subscribers can retain their plan. Some older guides still list the plan as an option, but it isn't a valid purchase path for a new account today.

New customers who pay contractors should compare Simple, Plus and Premium. Gusto's current pricing FAQ says US contractors are charged at the selected plan's per-person rate only in months when they're paid. This is a useful distinction for seasonal contractors: don't automatically multiply a contractor's monthly charge by every month of the year.

Gusto also advertises global contractor payments without a monthly per-contractor fee, with service and foreign exchange charges per payment. The pricing page displays a $5 charge for payments to US-based bank accounts. Cross-border buyers should obtain the current destination-specific payment cost rather than assume that one fee covers every currency and destination.

Does Gusto offer a Solo plan?

Gusto markets a separate Solo offering for people paying themselves, including S corporation owners. Its official guide describes pricing starting at $49 plus $6 per person. Solo is built for a different payroll workflow than a multi-employee team, so compare what it includes with Simple before choosing.

A business owner paying themselves should confirm the legal entity, compensation approach and payroll setup with a qualified tax adviser. Gusto provides payroll tools, but the suitability of an S corporation election and a reasonable salary depends on the business's circumstances. Don't assume any tax saving's guaranteed.

Gusto add-on pricing: what makes the bill grow?

Gusto's add-ons can materially change the monthly total. The pricing page publishes charges for faster pay, time and attendance, support, compliance, remote I-9, E-Verify and benefits services. Check both the unit and whether the feature is already included in your plan.

Optional item

Published charge

Availability or condition

Next-Day pay

$15/month + $3/person/month

Simple add-on; included with Plus and Premium

Same-day pay

$90 per payroll

Included with Premium; optional on Simple and Plus

Instant pay

$100 per payroll

Included with Premium; optional on Simple and Plus

Time & Attendance Plus

$6/person/month after trial

Available with Simple

Priority Support

$30/month + $3/person/month

Available with Simple and Plus

Gusto Business Compliance

$85/month per state, annual contract

Included with Premium

Remote I-9

$20/submission

Included with Premium

E-Verify

$5/submission on top of Remote I-9

Included with Premium

Bring Your Broker integration

$6/eligible employee/month

New-account terms vary by plan and legacy status

Workers' compensation

Starting at $14/month

Insurance costs and eligibility vary

Gusto Money Plus

$19/month

Optional money management service

FSA, dependent care FSA or commuter

$4/participant/month, $20/month minimum

Separate annual service charge applies

The tax-advantaged benefits section also lists a $200 annual service charge covering its account types. Insurance premiums are separate from software charges. Gusto says health insurance administration carries no extra fee when Gusto is the broker, but the employer still pays the policy premiums.

When is upgrading cheaper than adding features?

At ten people, Simple plus Next-Day pay would cost $154 per month: $109 for Simple, $15 base for faster pay and $30 in additional person fees. Plus is $200 per month at the same headcount. If next-day pay is the only missing feature, the Simple add-on is cheaper by $46 per month.

If the same ten-person employer also buys Time & Attendance Plus, the Simple configuration rises to $214 per month before any other extras. That's $14 more than Plus, which already includes time tracking and unlimited next-day pay. The calculation doesn't prove that Plus is right for every employer, but it shows why comparing the full configuration is better than comparing base fees.

A different calculation applies to Premium. At ten people, Plus with Priority Support costs $260 per month, while Premium costs $400. The extra $140 should be evaluated against Premium's included HR guidance, compliance services and faster pay. Don't buy Premium only because the name sounds safer.

What about state registration and benefits?

Gusto lists state tax registration pricing as varying by state. That means the fee can't be added to a general national price table without a specific state quote. HR should identify the work locations and effective hire dates, while payroll confirms tax account readiness before the first run.

For benefits, distinguish software administration fees from insurance premiums, retirement plan charges and participant-based account fees. Gusto lists a $6 per eligible employee monthly fee for broker integration and variable pricing for 401(k) integrations. A benefits quote should identify each payer and each recurring charge.

People-ops checklist: budget the handoffs, not just payroll

A reliable payroll purchase begins with an ownership map. Gusto may calculate and file payroll taxes, but your organization still needs to supply accurate worker data, approve time and pay changes, resolve missing documents and verify that the first payroll matches the hiring record.

People OpsConfirm worker type, work location, start date and onboarding owner Before offer acceptance

FinanceModel plan fees, benefits premiums and expected add-ons Before purchase

PayrollConfirm state registration, tax setup and first payroll cutoff Before first pay cycle

Hiring managerApprove time, PTO and pay changes with a named backup Each payroll cycle

ITProvision access and record approved permissions Before day one

People Ops + PayrollReconcile active workers, paid contractors and invoices Monthly

For onboarding, the hardest gaps are usually between teams. The hiring manager may know the start date before payroll does. IT may provision access without receiving the worker's final status. Finance may approve a plan based on employee count without knowing that contractors are paid only intermittently. Assign each handoff an owner and a deadline.

A coordination layer such as The People Ops Manager, our own product, can track readiness and approvals across HR, IT, finance and managers. It isn't a payroll system or HRIS, and it doesn't replace Gusto's tax filing or payroll calculations. The useful distinction's that payroll executes the payment while the onboarding process confirms that the right inputs and approvals arrived.

Questions to settle before signing up

Gusto purchasing checklist

Count active employees by state and list expected hires

List contractors and identify months they'll be paid

Confirm whether time tracking and next-day pay are required

Price optional support, compliance and benefits services separately

Check the current October 2026 packaging for new accounts

Confirm who owns tax registrations and payroll cutoffs

Record how plan upgrades, downgrades and cancellations work

Assign owners for worker data, approvals and monthly invoice review

If you already have an HRIS, ask whether payroll should be the system of record for personal details or whether another application remains authoritative. If you use separate time tracking, define which system resolves discrepancies. A payroll integration doesn't eliminate the need for someone to decide which record is correct.

Contracts, billing and cancellation

Gusto says its core plans are month-to-month and can be canceled at any time. Plan upgrades take effect immediately, while downgrades start at the beginning of the next billing period. That makes the subscription flexible, but some add-ons have different commitments. Gusto Business Compliance, for example, is advertised at $85 per month per state on an annual contract.

For budgeting, keep the plan subscription, add-on commitments, taxes and benefit costs in separate rows. Ask for the effective date of any plan change and retain the final order details. The price on a marketing page is useful for comparison; the account's actual invoice and signed terms govern the transaction.

Gusto's pricing FAQ says active employees drive the per-person charge. US contractors are charged in months when they're paid. Review both counts before approving the monthly bill. If the payroll administrator and finance reviewer use different rosters, you'll spend time explaining avoidable discrepancies.

Gusto pricing compared with alternatives

Gusto's a credible choice for a small US employer that wants payroll and HR tools in one service, but it isn't automatically the least expensive choice. The comparison depends on multi-state needs, time tracking, benefits, accounting integration and support. Published competitor offers and promotions can change, so a current vendor quote is more useful than a fixed cross-vendor price table.

A business already using QuickBooks accounting should compare its payroll bundle against Gusto's subscription and the work needed to reconcile systems. A business with multiple state registrations should check whether a competitor includes those workflows in its base plan. A company hiring internationally should distinguish domestic payroll from employer-of-record services and contractor payouts, since they solve different legal and operational problems.

The purchasing test's practical: document the exact workflow you need, identify the least expensive plan that supports it and calculate the cost at today's headcount and at the headcount you expect to reach. Then evaluate implementation effort and ownership. The lowest advertised base fee isn't necessarily the lowest total cost of running payroll correctly.

For a closer look at the buying tradeoffs, see our Rippling pricing guide and BambooHR versus Rippling comparison.
